Selfridge’s use multimedia to enhance their window displays

Anything you can do these days to attract visitors to your high street shop or store is needed. Selfridge’s have installed a whispering window to attract more customers to their stores.

They haven’t just put up an enticing window display. They’ve attached a device to the window that essentially turns the window into one big speaker and announces pertinent offers to passers-by. This is more attention-grabbing than simply visual displays.

Visual displays are still highly important for the high street shop, but anyway that you can attract the attention of passers-by, the better.

You can read the original article here.

The technology that they use is noted below from the original article, Casio XJ-ST155 Laser & LED hybrid projector.

The Casio projector is used both to create wholly animated video displays and to enhance traditional window-dressed displays with effects including the following;

  • Simulated clouds
  • Rippling water
  • Moving textures

The projector animation content and effects could be changed as simply as swapping over the memory stick plugged into the device. Casio Marketing Director Tim Gould said Casio Projectors are normally known for their use in education and offices. So being used for one of the most famous stores in London is very exciting for us. Digital signage is perfect for retail scenarios, keeping the campaign fast-paced and constantly engaging for the customer.

The projector worked well with projecting designs and animation upon the naturally 3D shop windows display according to Freehand’s Mike Fabian.

FeONIC’s Whispering Window

Selfridges new window displays are also incorporating sound courtesy of a FeONIC Whispering Window system. This system has been used before by Selfridges and other retailers but in combination with the projector animations and effects by Freehand should be even more effective.

FeONIC claims the surprising sound coming from the window on its own can bring Department Store sales increase of over 40%. The sound isn’t an assault on the senses but is subtle and unobtrusive audio that catches the attention of passers-by.

The Whispering Window is quite an accessible technology generally. The Whispering Window or Whispering Window Lite at £818 and £455 (ex VAT P&P) should provide all you need. Lite version for smaller windows. It’s not just for shop windows, the technology can be used to transform many solid surfaces into a speaker; shelves, mannequins, walls, floors, ceilings, and partitions all work well.

Selfridge’s can afford this type of technology for their store. So you have to do what you can within your budget to make the best shop displays and user experience. You can use many shop display items readily available, such as shop shelving, clothes hangers, clothes mannequins, and display stands to make your store more enticing.
