Have Sainsbury\u2019s just managed to oust John Lewis & M&S in the bid for the best advertising campaign this Christmas. Sainsbury\u2019s has teamed up with the Royal British Legion to create a heart-warming Christmas advert fitting for the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The three-minute video, created with ad agency AMV BBDO, eschews Christmas trees and turkeys and other assorted gaudy festive paraphernalia.<\/span><\/p>\n

The supermarket giant unveiled its new seasonal\u00a0promo last night with the \u2018Christmas is for sharing\u2019 ad set focusing on the events of\u00a0Christmas 1914.<\/span><\/p>\n

The video portrays the Christmas truce of 1914, where British and German soldiers ventured into No Man’s Land to greet one another and exchange gifts. It begins with the German troops singing Silent Night before the carol is taken up by the British men sitting just a few hundred yards away in their trench.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Eventually, a young British soldier tentatively raises his hands and walks out into No Man’s Land – so-called because so many were killed in the space between rival trenches.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Christmas truce of World War One saw soldiers across the Western Front cease hostilities to exchange greetings and sing carols, with some areas even seeing men from both sides exchange gifts and play football.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the Sainsbury\u2019s advert, British and German soldiers both sing the carol Silent Night in their respective languages before crossing No Man\u2019s Land to play football, with one British soldier giving his German counterpart a chocolate bar.<\/span><\/p>\n

While some may\u00a0question why\u00a0the supermarket is using WWI as a promotional tool, the advert is a joint venture with the Royal British Legion. The chocolate bar featured in the advert will be on sale for \u00a31, with all profits going to the charity.<\/span><\/p>\n

John Lewis used the theme friendship with a young boy and his penguin called Monty<\/a> in their Christmas advert for 2014. M&S launched their Christmas advert which was themed around two fairies<\/a>. Who do you think has the best Christmas advert. <\/span><\/p>\n

At the time of us writing this blog post the number of youtube views was as follows; John Lewis @ 13.3 million, M&S @ 2.7 million and Sainsbury’s @ 885,000.<\/span><\/p>\n
